How to clean a washer machine:

For Front-Loading Washers:

  1. Gather your supplies: You’ll need white vinegar, baking soda, a microfiber cloth or sponge, and a small brush (an old toothbrush works well).
  2. Empty the washer: Remove any clothing or items from the washer drum.
  3. Clean the detergent dispenser: Remove the detergent drawer (if applicable) and clean it with warm, soapy water. Use a small brush to remove any residue in the drawer compartment.
  4. Run a cleaning cycle:
    • Fill the detergent dispenser with 2 cups of white vinegar.
    • Set the washer to its highest water temperature and longest wash cycle.
    • Start the machine and let it run through the cycle. The vinegar will help disinfect and remove mineral buildup.
  5. Clean the door gasket: After the cycle is complete, open the door and wipe down the rubber gasket with a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar. Pay special attention to any mold or mildew buildup.
  6. Clean the drum: Sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda directly into the drum. Run a second cycle on the hottest water setting. This will help remove odors and any remaining residue.
  7. Wipe down the exterior: Use a damp microfiber cloth or sponge to wipe down the outside of the washer, including the control panel and knobs.
  8. Leave the door open: To prevent mold growth between uses, leave the washer door ajar so it can dry out completely.
